Vanuatu land diving

Land diving is a precursor to bungee jumping, in which men leap headfirst off a 20-30-metre platform with vines tied to their ankles. The aim is to touch the ground with their heads. This is both a test of bravery, as the men prove their strength to the women of the island, and is also linked to their religious beliefs.

They believe that a successful dive will ensure a good yam harvest (their staple food source) and also demonstrates their manhood. This spectacular display, based on a local legend, is fraught with danger. Selecting a vine that isn’t strong or flexible enough is potentially fatal.
