It will take 2 more years to complete the Norsup Airport in Malekula by 2027 with the project cost valued at over VT2 Billion with estimation for the runway to be completed by early next year 2026.

Public Relations Officer of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Kevin Enrel told VBTC News that they hope to finish the aiport terminal with the runway by next year.

Mr Enrel said phase 2 of the runway works is now going on.

“The runway work is going now. The work to do with the network is already complete, and now the general patching to fill up the runway, etc., and now with the materials the work is going ahead,” He said.

“The quarry materials that we are using now are taken at Lowsonwei in the North Western Part of Malekula; its 2-3KM from there to Norsup.

Mr Enrel said that the black stone is being brought from Australia.

“The other materials after the completion, we will put up to enquiry to get more black stone imported from Australia. At the beginning of the work, we had many locals working. In the construction of the work, of course, yes, CCECC had over almost 100 workmen to work on the road, and now shifted to the starting of the airport. Many young people were employed, and now in the middle of the work stage, we have reduced the number, and now almost the machines are doing the work,” Mr Enrel said.

He said the storage of materials has been ongoing now for the past three months.

“A big half of time for CCECC is to store materials; its almost 2-3 months that we are still storing materials for the airport works,” He said.

“So all the materials were taken from the quarry site in Lowsonwei to Norsup for storage.”

The Government has assured the people of Malampa that Norsup Airport will be built to accommodate bigger planes.

Minister of Finance, Hon. Johnny Koanapo told VBTC News during the time he led a delegation with the Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Harry Xavier Iako, in June to see the Norsup Airport project works.

“I want to assure the people of Malampa that the Government is strongly committed to completing the airport and will work its way to get the ATR back on the ground,” Minister Koanapo said.

CCECC is calling all for support with the Norsup airport upgrade.
